Retail boxes are the printed paperboard cartons a product sells in: cut and creased from a flat sheet, folded and glued, and sized to the item inside. Custom Boxez produces custom retail packaging for UK product brands and retailers in straight-tuck, reverse-tuck, auto-lock bottom, sleeve, pillow, hanging-tab, window and display styles, on 300–600 GSM board, printed CMYK or Pantone and finished with lamination, spot UV, foil or embossing. Every carton is made to your product’s dimensions rather than a stock size. Send us the product size, quantity, print and finish requirements and we will prepare a custom quotation.

Custom Printed Retail Packaging
A retail carton is specified by three decisions: the structure (how it opens, closes and holds the product), the board (how stiff and heavy it feels), and the print and finish (how it looks on the shelf). Get the structure right first – a carton that pops open, sags or lets the product rattle undoes any amount of good print. We build each carton from your product's dimensions on a dieline we prepare, proof the artwork on that dieline, and produce the run to the same specification every time you reorder.
Retail Box Styles
- Tuck-end boxes – straight tuck (both flaps tuck the same way) and reverse tuck (flaps tuck opposite ways); the standard carton for most small and medium products.
- Auto-lock bottom boxes – the base locks itself when the carton is squared up; faster to pack and stronger for heavier items such as jars and bottles.
- Folding boxes and paper boxes – general folding cartons in the style and board that suit the product.
- Sleeve boxes – an open-ended printed sleeve over a tray or the product itself.
- Pillow boxes – curved-end cartons for soft goods, accessories and small gifts.
- Hanging tab boxes – tuck cartons with a euro-slot or round hole for peg display.
- Display boxes and die-cut boxes – counter display units and custom-shaped cartons.
- Cube boxes, drawer boxes, presentation boxes – shapes for gifting and premium retail.
- Product-specific cartons – candle, soap, apparel, shirt, medicine, game, playing card, software, kraft and cardboard boxes, among others in the grid above.

Paperboard & Packaging Materials
Retail cartons are made from coated paperboard between 300 and 600 GSM. Lighter board (300–350 GSM) suits small, light products and keeps unit cost down; mid-weight board (375–420 GSM) is the usual choice for cosmetics, supplements and small electronics; heavier board (500–600 GSM) is used for larger cartons, heavier contents, and where a firmer feel is part of the product's positioning. White board gives the truest colour; kraft board gives a natural, uncoated look. Corrugated board is used instead of paperboard where the carton also ships the product or where it is large enough to need extra stiffness – see corrugated boxes.
Printing & Finishing
Cartons are printed CMYK, with Pantone spot colours where a brand colour must be exact, on the outside and optionally the inside. Lamination – matte, gloss or soft-touch – protects the print from scuffing on shelf and in transit and sets the surface feel; it is included where it applies to your specification. Semi-gloss varnish is the lower-cost alternative. Spot UV, foil stamping, embossing and debossing are used to lift a logo or pattern; a die-cut window (with or without a clear film patch) shows the product where it sells on appearance.
Packaging Designed Around Product Dimensions
Send us the product's length, width and depth (or diameter and height for round items) and we will size the carton with the small clearance needed for the product to slide in and out without moving in the box. If the product is heavy, we will recommend an auto-lock base; if it is fragile, a card insert or platform. Where a product comes in several sizes, we keep the same style and specification and change only the dimensions, so the range looks consistent on the shelf.
Retail Presentation & Shelf Impact
The front panel is the one the customer sees first: product name, brand and the main claim belong there, at a size readable from arm's length. Side panels carry variant, size and secondary information. The back panel holds the barcode – in a flat, unlaminated-safe area with enough quiet zone to scan – along with ingredients, instructions and any regulatory text your product requires. A window is worth adding when the product sells on colour or texture, and not otherwise. The finish should match the price point: soft-touch and foil for premium, gloss for bright FMCG, uncoated kraft for natural positioning. Structural fit matters as much as graphics – a carton that stands square and closes cleanly reads as a better product.
What Affects Retail Box Pricing?
- Dimensions – a larger blank uses more board and yields fewer cartons per sheet.
- Board weight – heavier board costs more per sheet.
- Quantity – dies, plates and make-ready are spread across the run, so unit price falls with volume.
- Style – auto-lock bases, windows and display structures use more board and more die-cutting than a simple tuck carton.
- Printing – CMYK plus spot colours, or inside printing, adds passes.
- Finishing – foil, embossing and spot UV are separate processes; lamination is included where it applies.
- Inserts – card platforms and dividers add die-cutting and assembly.

Retail Packaging FAQs
Which carton style should I choose?
For most light products a reverse or straight tuck carton is the most economical. For heavy or glass products choose an auto-lock bottom. For peg display add a hanging tab. If you are unsure, tell us what the product is and how it is sold and we will recommend a style.
What board weight do I need?
300–350 GSM for small light items, 375–420 GSM for most cosmetics and consumer products, 500–600 GSM for larger cartons and heavier contents. We confirm the board with your quotation.
Can I have a window in the box?
Yes. Die-cut windows can be left open or fitted with a clear film patch.
Can you match the packaging I already use?
Yes. Send us a sample or the dimensions and specification of your current carton and we will reproduce the structure, and improve it where you want changes.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
Minimum order quantities typically start from 50 boxes and may vary depending on the box style, materials and specification. Tell us the quantity you require and we'll advise the most suitable production option.
How long does a retail packaging order take?
Production times depend on the box style, quantity, materials, printing and finishing requirements. Your estimated production and delivery schedule will be confirmed with your quotation.
