Foil blocking (hot foil stamping)

Foil blocking, also called hot foil stamping, presses a thin metallic or coloured foil onto packaging with a heated die. It gives logos and type a bright, reflective finish that ink cannot match. It works on laminated board, coated carton, kraft and many speciality papers, with honest limits on fine detail, textured stock and large solid areas. How foil blocking works

Blocking foil is a thin film built in layers: a carrier, a release layer, the colour or metallised layer, and a heat-activated adhesive. A metal die is made from your artwork, heated in the press and brought down onto the foil and the board together. Where the die touches, the adhesive bonds and the foil releases; everywhere else the foil lifts away with the carrier.

Foil is a separate process from printing. It is applied after printing and lamination and before the box is cut and creased, or to the wrap before a rigid box is covered. Each foil colour needs its own pass and its own die. Foil is registered to the print, but there is a small tolerance between the two, so artwork should not rely on foil sitting exactly against a printed edge.

The foil choices are wide. Metallic foils include gold, silver, copper and rose gold, in bright or brushed finishes. Pigment foils give flat, opaque colour, including white and black, and can put white onto kraft or dark papers where ink cannot. Holographic and pearlescent foils add movement, and clear gloss foil gives a subtle shine.

Foil combines well with other finishes. Foil and emboss together, using a sculpted combination die, gives a raised metallic logo in one pass. A foil deboss presses the logo into the surface with a crisp metallic floor. Foil on matt or soft-touch lamination creates strong contrast, although soft-touch needs a foil made to bond with its coating.

Cold foil is a different process, applied in line on the printing press with an adhesive and often overprinted with colour. It suits larger areas and metallic effects mixed with print, and is typically used on longer runs. Most custom packaging uses hot foil blocking, which gives the crisp, slightly pressed finish people associate with premium boxes.

Limitations

Where it falls short

  • Foil cannot reproduce gradients, tints or photographic detail; each foil is one solid colour.
  • Very fine lines, small type and tight gaps can fill in or break up, especially on uncoated stock.
  • On textured papers, foil bonds to the high points and fine detail is lost; a foil deboss helps.
  • Large solid areas of foil can look patchy or show small pinholes; keep foil to logos, type and borders.
  • Foil across a crease or fold can crack, so keep it off score lines and rigid-box turn-in edges.
  • Soft-touch lamination needs a foil made to bond with its coating, so the two must be matched.

How to choose

How to design for foil blocking

  • Keep foil to what matters

    Foil works best on a logo, a product name or a border. A small, confident area of foil reads as more premium than a box covered in it.

  • Design in solid vector shapes

    Supply foil as its own spot-colour layer in solid vector artwork, with no tints, gradients or effects. Anything that is not solid will not transfer cleanly.

  • Choose the foil against the stock

    Gold and copper suit kraft, black and deep colours; silver suits cool palettes; white pigment foil gives white on brown or dark papers.

  • Allow for registration

    Foil is applied in a separate pass. Avoid designs where foil must sit exactly against a printed edge; give it a small overlap or a clear gap instead.

  • Keep it off folds and edges

    Foil can crack where board bends. Keep it clear of creases, glue flaps and the turn-in edges of rigid boxes.

What is foil blocking?

Is foil blocking the same as hot foil stamping?

Yes. Foil blocking is the usual UK term and hot foil stamping is the common international one; both describe the same heat-and-pressure process. Cold foil is a different, press-based process used mainly for larger areas on longer runs.

What colours of foil are available?

Metallic foils such as gold, silver, copper and rose gold are the most common, in bright or brushed finishes. Pigment foils give flat colours including black and white, and holographic, pearlescent and clear gloss foils are also available.

Can you foil onto kraft board?

Yes, and it works well. Gold, copper and white foils show strongly against brown board. Fine detail is slightly softer than on smooth coated board, so keep lines and text bold.

Does foil work on soft-touch lamination?

Yes, with the right foil. Soft-touch has a special surface coating, so the foil must be made to bond with it. Matched correctly, foil on soft-touch gives some of the strongest contrast of any combination.

What is the difference between foil blocking and metallic ink?

Foil is a true metallic layer, so it is bright and mirror-like. Metallic ink contains metallic pigment in the ink, which gives a softer sheen but can be printed in fine detail and combined with other colours in one pass.

How should I supply artwork for foil?

Supply the foil area as a separate layer or spot colour in solid vector artwork, with no tints or effects, and mark which foil each layer uses. Keep lines and gaps generous and keep foil away from folds and glue areas.

Can foil be combined with embossing?

Yes. A combination die can foil and emboss in one pass for a raised metallic logo, or foil can be pressed into a deboss for a recessed metallic finish. Both need bold artwork and a suitable stock.
