Straight Tuck End Boxes

A straight tuck end box is a one-piece folding carton whose top and bottom closures both hinge from the back panel and tuck in towards the front. The front face stays clean at both ends, which is why it is the default carton for cosmetics, supplements and gifts that sell on their front panel. Construction

How it is built

  • One blank, four body panels and a glue flap

    The carton is die-cut and scored from a single sheet of board: four body panels in a row (front, side, back, side) with a narrow glue flap on one edge. On a folder-gluer the glue flap is bonded to the inside of the opposite panel, making a flattened tube with one side seam. The seam is placed at a back corner so it never crosses the front artwork, and the carton is delivered folded flat along two of its vertical scores.

  • Both closures hinge from the back panel

    At each end a closure panel (the lid) is hinged from the top or bottom edge of the back panel, and each lid ends in a tongue called the tuck. Because both lids hinge from the back, both tucks go in towards the front. The front panel therefore runs clean from its top edge to its bottom edge, and the artwork on the two lids reads the same way round when the carton stands on a shelf. That shared hinge side is the 'straight' in straight tuck.

  • Dust flaps and friction locks

    Each side panel carries a small dust flap at both ends. The dust flaps fold in first, under the lid, closing the corners and giving the tuck something to bear against. Slits cut at the shoulders of the tuck's fold line hook over the curved shoulders of the dust flaps as the tongue goes in. This detail, called a friction or slit lock, is what makes a well-made tuck click shut and stay shut instead of springing back open.

  • Scores, grain and clearance

    Every fold is a crease (score) pressed into the board by the cutting forme, with the score width matched to the board's caliper so panels fold square without cracking. The grain direction of the board is set on the layout so the long panels resist bowing. The carton is sized to your product plus a small clearance, typically one to three millimetres, so the item slides in and out without rattling or catching on the tuck.

  • Why it uses slightly more board than reverse tuck

    Because both lids sit on the same side of the blank, straight tuck blanks cannot interlock as tightly on the printed sheet as reverse tuck blanks, whose lids point in opposite directions. The result is a little more board per carton. On short runs it barely registers in the price; on long runs of small cartons it is the main reason buyers move to reverse tuck.

Opening and closing

How it opens and closes

Opening

The customer lifts the top tuck with a fingertip at the front edge; the friction locks release and the lid swings back on its hinge along the top of the back panel. The opening is the full cross-section of the carton, so the product lifts straight out. A small thumb notch cut into the top edge of the front panel makes the tuck easy to find without creasing the lid.

Closing

The two dust flaps fold in, the lid folds down over them and the tuck slides between the dust flaps and the inside of the front panel until the friction locks catch. The bottom end closes the same way, normally at the packing stage before the product goes in. Nothing is glued, so the top can be opened and reclosed many times, which suits products that are used over weeks.

Advantages and limitations

Strengths, and where it falls short

Advantages

  • The front panel runs uninterrupted from top to bottom, which suits full-height artwork and front windows.
  • Both lids print the same way round, so the carton reads correctly whichever end the customer looks at.
  • Reclosable without adhesive: the friction locks hold the lid shut between uses.
  • Ships and stores flat, and erects by hand in a few seconds with no tools, glue or tape.
  • Runs on horizontal end-load cartoning machines as well as by hand, so the same design can move from a first order of 50 boxes to a packing line.
  • One blank and one straight glue line make it one of the most economical printed cartons to produce.

Limitations

  • The bottom is held by friction, not glue. As a working rule a tuck bottom suits contents up to a few hundred grams; heavier items, glass and jars need a crash-lock or snap lock base.
  • Uses slightly more board than a reverse tuck carton of the same size, which adds up on long runs of small cartons.
  • A folding carton is retail packaging rather than a transit box: on its own it will not survive a courier network, so filled cartons travel inside a mailer or outer carton.
  • Tall, narrow cartons can bow on their long panels unless the board is heavier or an insert squares the carton from inside.
  • The top can be opened on the shelf without leaving a trace; if tamper evidence matters, add a seal label, a tear strip or a seal end.

Materials, printing and finishes

What it is made from and how it is decorated

Materials

  • Folding boxboard (FBB)

    The standard choice: a bright coated top side for print over a bulky, stiff middle layer. 300–350 gsm covers most cartons, 400 gsm for larger panels.

  • Solid bleached board (SBS)

    Bleached fibre all the way through, so it is white on both faces and cuts cleanly. Chosen for inside print, fine embossing and premium cosmetics.

  • Kraft board

    Unbleached brown or white-lined kraft for a natural look. Colours print darker on brown, and litho cannot print an opaque white on it.

  • Metallised and speciality boards

    Silver metallised board or a textured paper laminated to board, where the surface itself carries the premium effect.

Printing

Most straight tuck cartons are printed by litho in CMYK, with Pantone spot colours where a brand colour must match exactly across a range. Digital print suits short runs and multiple versions, such as several flavours or shades on one carton design. Printing the inside is a separate pass that turns the lid and inner panels into space for a message or pattern. Artwork is placed on our dieline for your size so that text keeps clear of scores, tucks and the glue flap, with 3 mm bleed beyond every cut edge.

Finishes

  • Matt, gloss or soft-touch lamination

    A film laminated over the print that resists scuffing, reduces cracking along scores on dark colours and sets the feel. Lamination is free on every order.

  • Foil blocking

    Metallic or pigment foil pressed into a logo or border on the front panel or lid, on laminated or uncoated board.

  • Embossing and debossing

    Raised or recessed lettering on the front panel, kept clear of the scores so the panel still folds flat.

  • Spot UV

    A clear gloss coating on chosen areas, at its most striking over matt or soft-touch lamination.

  • Window patching

    A die-cut aperture in the front panel with clear film glued behind it, so the product is seen before the carton is opened.

Inserts, shipping and packing

Practicalities

Inserts

An insert holds the product still and centres it in the carton. For straight tuck boxes it is usually a die-cut board insert: a platform with a hole for a bottle neck, a card cradle for a jar, or a partition that separates two or three items. Corrugated and moulded pulp inserts suit heavier or more fragile contents. We design the insert with the carton, because it changes the internal dimensions and must not make the tuck hard to close.

Shipping

Straight tuck cartons are delivered flat, glued at the side seam and stacked in bundles inside corrugated courier cartons, which keeps storage and freight compact. Delivery is included on every order. Your quotation confirms the delivery address and timing. When filled cartons go on to your own customers, pack them in a mailer box or outer carton, since a folding carton is designed to present the product rather than protect it in transit.

Packing and assembly

By hand, a packer squares the flat tube, closes the bottom tuck, drops the product in and closes the top: a few seconds per carton, with no glue or tape. On a packing line, straight tuck cartons run on horizontal end-load cartoners, which open the carton, push the product in from one end and close both tucks. If you plan to use a machine, send its make and carton size range with your enquiry so the tuck lengths and scores are set up for it.

What is the difference between straight tuck and reverse tuck?

On a straight tuck box both lids hinge from the back panel, so both tucks go in towards the front and the front panel is clean at both ends. On a reverse tuck box the bottom lid hinges from the front panel instead. Reverse tuck uses less board; straight tuck gives the tidier front and is preferred for front windows and premium cartons.

How much weight can a straight tuck end box hold?

It depends on the board, the size of the base and how the carton is handled, but as a working rule a tuck bottom is comfortable with a few hundred grams. Above roughly half a kilogram, or with glass, specify a crash-lock or snap lock base and we will set the rest of the carton up to match.

What board thickness is normal for tuck end cartons?

Most straight tuck cartons use 300–350 gsm folding boxboard, which is roughly 400–500 microns thick depending on the mill. Larger or heavier cartons move up to 400 gsm, and SBS is chosen where both faces must be bright white.

Do the cartons arrive assembled?

No. They are delivered flat with the side seam already glued, so all that is left is to square the carton and close the tucks. That keeps storage and delivery compact until you are ready to pack.

Can a straight tuck box have a window and a hang tab?
