Why Screen Colours Differ from Printed Colours

Screens make colour by emitting red, green and blue light (RGB), while a printed box reflects light from cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink (CMYK). Screens can show brighter colours than ink can print, and every monitor displays colour differently, so a printed box never looks exactly like your screen. That is why colour decisions should be made on physical proofs and references.
Knowing why this happens, and which colours are most affected, lets you design around it rather than discovering it at the proof stage.
RGB and CMYK: light versus ink
The two systems work in opposite ways.

Because a screen is a light source, it can show colours more luminous than anything ink on board can reflect. When artwork is converted from RGB to CMYK, colours outside the printable range are brought to the nearest printable equivalent. That shift is what people notice as "the print looks duller".
Why your monitor is not a proof
Even two screens side by side rarely show the same colour. Several things affect what you see:
- Brightness. Most screens are set far brighter than a printed surface appears in normal light.
- Screen technology. Laptop, desktop, phone and tablet displays have different colour ranges. Many modern phones show colours beyond standard RGB.
- Settings and modes. Night modes, warm or cool colour settings and automatic brightness all change colour.
- Calibration. An uncalibrated monitor can be noticeably off in colour balance.
- The room. Daylight, warm lamps and office lighting change how both screens and prints look.
A calibrated monitor and soft proofing in your design software, which simulates how CMYK will look, make your screen a much better guide. They still cannot make emitted light look exactly like reflected light.
Colours that change most in print

The board and finish change it again
Screen-to-print differences are only half the story. The printed colour also depends on what it is printed on and what goes over it.
- White coated board such as folding boxboard gives the brightest, most accurate result.
- Kraft board is brown, so colours print darker and warmer, and anything designed as white shows the board unless white ink is specified.

Converting RGB artwork to CMYK
Do the conversion yourself, before you send files. That way you see the change and can adjust colours you are not happy with, rather than meeting the difference for the first time on the proof.
- Set your design software to a CMYK profile suited to coated board. European profiles such as FOGRA39 or FOGRA51 are widely used; ask us which suits your job.
- Use soft proofing to preview the CMYK result on screen.
- Convert photographs and colour swatches to CMYK.
- Review bright colours in particular, and adjust or switch them to Pantone where needed.
- Check large dark areas and set small text to 100% black.

Every job receives a digital proof of the artwork on the dieline, and production does not start until you approve it. If colour is critical, ask about sample options when you request your quotation; our guide to when a physical sample is needed helps you decide.
Setting sensible expectations
A small difference between your screen and the finished box is normal, and it happens with every supplier and every printing process. What you can control is how big the difference is and whether it surprises you. Designing in CMYK, using Pantone for critical colours, choosing board and finish with colour in mind, and judging against physical references keep the gap small and predictable. Common mistakes
Designing in RGB and converting at the end. The shift arrives as a surprise on the proof. Work in CMYK from the start.
Approving colour from a PDF on a phone. Phone screens are bright and vivid. Use them for content checks only.
Matching a website colour exactly. Some screen colours cannot be printed; choose the closest print colour deliberately.
Forgetting the board. Kraft and uncoated surfaces change colour whatever the file says.
Comparing under different lights. Judge proofs and references under the same, neutral lighting.
