Coated vs uncoated board: print, feel and finishes compared

Coated board has a thin mineral coating on its printing face, which makes it smooth, bright and less absorbent, so colours print sharp and finishes sit cleanly on top. Uncoated board shows its natural fibre surface, soaks up more ink and prints softer, but gives a tactile, natural feel that suits some brands better. Most printed cartons use a coated face, and the real decision is often whether the back needs a coating too.

What "coated" actually means
At the mill, a thin layer of mineral pigment, usually clay or calcium carbonate mixed with a binder, is applied to the board and smoothed. Board may have one, two or three layers of coating on its face. The coating fills the gaps between fibres, so the surface is flatter, whiter and holds ink on top instead of letting it soak in.
"Coated" is easily confused with three other things that go on or into board. They do different jobs and are often combined.

How each surface affects print
On coated board, ink stays on the surface and each printed dot keeps its shape, so photographs look sharp and colours look close to the proof. On uncoated board, ink is absorbed into the fibres and each dot spreads a little, which printers call dot gain. The result is softer colour, less contrast and slightly heavier-looking detail.
Printers allow for this by preparing artwork with a colour profile for the surface. In the UK and Europe that is usually a coated FOGRA profile for coated board and an uncoated one for uncoated stock; your artwork guidance will say which. How each surface takes finishes
The surface decides which finishes work well, and this is often what settles the choice.
- Lamination. Bonds evenly to coated board. It also bonds to uncoated board, but hides much of the natural texture you chose it for.
- Spot UV. Needs a smooth, sealed surface. On coated and laminated board it gives strong contrast; on uncoated or kraft board the varnish soaks in and looks patchy. See spot UV.
- Foil blocking. Crisp on coated or laminated board; good on smooth uncoated stock; fine detail breaks up on rough or textured surfaces. See foil blocking.
- Embossing and debossing. Uncoated and textured stocks stretch and hold a deep, crisp impression. Coated board embosses well at moderate depth but can crack at the edges if pushed too far. See embossing and debossing.
For premium textures without print, such as linen, felt or leather-grain wraps on rigid boxes, speciality papers are usually a better route than plain uncoated board.
Coated one side or coated both sides
Most carton board is coated on the printing face only. The back, which becomes the inside of the carton, is usually uncoated, and on folding boxboard it is often cream or manila rather than bright white. That is ideal for most cartons: the back glues well and is economical, and nobody sees it.
Choose a coated back, sometimes sold as coated two sides, when:
- you are printing inside the carton and want the inside print to match the outside;
- the carton is opened on display, on camera or at the counter, so the inside is part of the presentation;
- you need a clean white inside for a light-coloured product.

When uncoated is the right choice
Uncoated board earns its place when the look and feel matter more than colour precision. It suits natural and craft brands, tea, coffee, candles and handmade goods, especially with one or two bold colours and a foil or deboss logo. It also suits packaging that customers write on, labels that are stamped by hand, and designs where a soft, printed-on-paper feel is the point.
It is the wrong choice for photographic artwork, exact colour matching across a range, and boxes that will be handled a lot without protection, because uncoated surfaces mark more easily.
Common mistakes
- Choosing Pantone colours from the wrong guide. A colour picked from the coated guide will look different on uncoated board.
- Expecting uncoated board to print like the screen. Colours soften and darken; prepare artwork and approve proofs for the real surface.
- Adding spot UV to uncoated or kraft board. It soaks in and gives little contrast; use foil or a deboss instead.
- Laminating a board chosen for its texture. The film hides the texture; decide which matters more before specifying both.
- Printing inside on an uncoated back and expecting outside quality. Specify a coated back if inside artwork matters.
- Confusing coated board with barrier board. A print coating does not make board suitable for direct food contact; see our food packaging guide.
