Crash-lock vs snap lock bottom: strength, speed and cost

A crash-lock (auto lock) bottom is stronger, more consistent and faster to pack, because its base is pre-glued and locks itself as the carton is squared. A snap lock (1-2-3) bottom is folded by hand, costs a little less to convert and is strong enough for most jars, bottles and boxed goods of moderate weight. Choose on product weight first, then on how many cartons you pack.

Why a carton needs a different base
A standard tuck end carton closes its base with a tuck held by friction. That is fine for light products, up to a few hundred grams as a working guide, but a heavier product pushes down on the tuck every time the carton is lifted, and eventually the tuck pulls out. Both of the bases compared here solve that problem the same way: each body panel ends in a base flap, and the four flaps overlap and interlock into a floor.
The difference is how the floor is made. On a crash-lock the interlock is partly glued during converting. On a snap lock nothing in the base is glued, and the packer folds the interlock by hand. Both are usually paired with a tuck top, so the customer opens either carton the same way, from the top. Strength: what each base will carry
A crash-lock is the strongest base you can put on a folding carton. The base flaps are bonded and overlapped, so the floor is double thickness over much of its area and resists being pushed open from inside. As a working guide, a crash-lock base in 350–400 GSM folding boxboard handles a filled glass jar or a bottle of around a kilogram.
A snap lock spreads the load across four interlocked flaps, so it carries far more than a tuck bottom in the same board. It is less strong and less consistent than a crash-lock, because the lock depends on how well it was folded, and small gaps can remain where the flaps meet.
The real limit for either depends on the footprint, the board, the contents and how roughly the carton is handled, so we size the base to your product rather than to a table.
An insert helps both bases. A board collar round a jar or a cradle for a bottle keeps the product off the side walls and spreads the load on the floor. On a snap lock it also covers the small gaps in the base, which matters for products with loose parts. See custom box inserts for the options.
Speed at the packing bench
Packing is where a crash-lock earns its cost. The packer picks up a flat carton, squares it, and the base crashes into place in one movement. Load the product, close the top, done.
A snap lock needs the 1-2-3 sequence: fold in the two small side flaps, fold one large flap over them, then fold the opposite large flap in and push its tabs past the first until the base snaps home. It takes a moment to learn and a few seconds per carton to do.
How much that matters depends on volume:
- A few hundred cartons packed in-house: the difference is rarely noticeable. A snap lock is a sensible saving.
- Thousands of cartons, or a busy seasonal peak: the extra seconds add up to hours, and a crash-lock usually pays for itself in packing time.
- Contract packing or a filling line: crash-lock, almost always. Snap lock cartons are not designed for machines.
Cost: where the difference comes from
A crash-lock costs somewhat more per unit for two reasons. The base flaps are larger than a tuck lid and its dust flaps, so the blank uses more board and nests less tightly on the printed sheet. And the base glue points need a folder-gluer set up for crash-lock work, with first-off cartons checked on every run, because a misplaced glue point stops the base locking.
A snap lock is glued only at the side seam, exactly like a tuck carton, so converting cost stays close to a tuck even though the blank is slightly larger.

How to choose
Work through these in order:
- What does the filled product weigh? Light, up to a few hundred grams: a tuck bottom may be enough. Moderate: snap lock. Heavy, or glass: crash-lock. Around a kilogram or more: crash-lock in micro-flute.
- How many cartons will you pack, and how? Small runs by hand favour snap lock. Large runs, peaks and any machine favour crash-lock.
- Does the floor need to be closed? Powders, loose parts and small components suit a crash-lock, or a snap lock with an insert or an inner bag.
- How small is the carton? Very small footprints leave little room for crash-lock flaps; a snap lock or tuck base is simpler there.
- Does the top need to show it has been opened? That is a question about the top, not the base. A seal label, or a seal end top on a crash-lock base, gives tamper evidence.
Crash-lock bases also appear under other styles. Gable and handle boxes almost always use one, because a loaded handle pulls hard on the floor.
Common mistakes
- Specifying crash-lock by default. For a light product packed in small numbers, you pay for strength and speed you do not use.
- Specifying snap lock for a production line. Snap lock cartons need hands. If a co-packer or machine is involved, check before ordering.
- Leaving out the insert. A heavy jar rocking in an oversized carton strains any base. A collar or cradle is often a better fix than a heavier board.
- Forgetting the gaps. Loose powders or small parts can escape through a snap lock floor unless they are bagged or an insert covers the base.
- Treating a strong base as a transit box. Both are retail cartons. For posting, pack them inside a mailer box with suitable cushioning.
